Our Program
Every conductor studying at the Summer Choral Institute is an undergraduate with 1-4 semesters of experience. Some have completed internships or student teaching, and some have never conducted beyond their conducting class. In this environment of learning, our conductors are nurtured and form lifelong friendships with their colleagues. There will be moments of enlightenment, hours of study, days of preparation, and life-changing weeks of work with our Artistic Staff in daily activities, our Guest Clinicians in private lessons and masterclasses, and our encouraging choir members. We dedicate this time to helping you achieve your educational goals.
Daily activities will include score study and mock rehearsals with the other conductors and artistic staff, special lectures from professionals regarding vocal pedagogy, diction, breathing, and performance practice. Excursions will include Dalcroze and Laban clinics. Each conductor will receive a private lesson with each guest lecturer. Evenings will be dedicated to choir rehearsals, guest lectures and masterclasses.
Each year, our program culminates with a Showcase in which we invite the community to enjoy a concert lead by the conductors. Conductors are assigned two contrasting pieces at the onset of the program and will conduct those two pieces in the Showcase. Conductors will be recorded and given their videos to use for future auditions or job searches.
