Every conductor studying at the Summer Choral Institute is an undergraduate with 1-4 semesters of experience. Some have completed internships or student teaching, and some have never conducted beyond their conducting class. In this environment of learning, our conductors are nurtured and form lifelong friendships with their colleagues. There will be moments of enlightenment, hours of study, days of preparation, and life-changing weeks of work with our Artistic Staff in daily activities, our Guest Clinicians in private lessons and masterclasses, and our encouraging choir members. We dedicate this time to helping you achieve your educational goals.
Daily activities will include score study and mock rehearsals with the other conductors and artistic staff, special lectures from professionals regarding vocal pedagogy, diction, breathing, and performance practice. Excursions will include Dalcroze and Laban clinics. Each conductor will receive a private lesson with each guest lecturer. Evenings will be dedicated to choir rehearsals, guest lectures and masterclasses.
Each year, our program culminates with a Showcase in which we invite the community to enjoy a concert lead by the conductors. Conductors are assigned two contrasting pieces at the onset of the program and will conduct those two pieces in the Showcase. Conductors will be recorded and given their videos to use for future auditions or job searches.
Conductors have the opportunity to stay with Host Families at a lower cost, or rent space in home available specifically for our summer program. Host families are carefully selected, respected members of the local choral community who have a spare room or two in their home. Our program's rental home offers double and single accommodation and is centrally located in walking distance to dining, shopping and easy access buslines.
Although a car is not required in Tucson, thanks to Uber and public transportation, it is encouraged. Walking for lengthy periods of the day in the Arizona summer heat is discouraged.
Audivi Vocem Summer Choral Institute is set against the vibrant and charismatic backdrop of Tucson, Arizona. Located in the Sonoran Desert and just one hour from the Mexican border, Tucson is home to the mighty Saguaro Cacti, which cover our landscape. We are surrounded by mountains, ideal for hiking on rest days. The city is alive with a unique personality and culture, relishing the visual and performing arts. You'll find a lovely downtown area, shopping, and miles of desert scenery unavailable anywhere else. The city is home to the University of Arizona and provides a college town atmosphere while also being a healthy middle size city with almost 1 million in the greater Metropolitan area. Every possible dining option is available but naturally Mexican food is our specialty. Artistic and gourmet coffee and tea shops are found all over the city and in summer, the city comes to life at night when the weather is coolest. From the oldest example of Spanish Mission Architecture in North America, to the peaks of Mt Lemmon where the landscape becomes a forest oasis, this is a very unforgettable place. June is warm here, be prepared for the dry heat and possibly a few desert monsoons late in the program.
